rice & beans

rice and beans is named after gallopinto, a traditional Central American dish you can have for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Like the dish, this monthly morning radio show is meant to accompany you through the day, offering comfort and connection.

With nostalgic sounds and musical storytelling, the show highlights migrant selectors based in Germany, exploring memory, identity, and belonging.

Hosted by azulado, co-founder of Gatxs and organizer based in Leipzig.

About this Episode

Malandrea is a black Colombian selector and dj based in Leipzig, member of the collective Conuco. Through music, she attempts to redefine the complex structures of her own identity. Curiosity has intertwined her personal life, hobbies and career, through a constant search of answers.

In this takeover, Malandrea presents a selection of music accompanying personal memories in southern Colombia; a journey back to past holidays in the 90s in Florencia. There, she spent time with grandparents, played outside, attended birthday parties, and adult gatherings. The set is a visit to a period of discovery and understanding of her afrocolombian roots, and the lasting influence of the indigenous and white-mestizo culture.
