rice & beans
rice and beans is named after gallopinto, a traditional Central American dish you can have for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Like the dish, this monthly morning radio show is meant to accompany you through the day, offering comfort and connection.
With nostalgic sounds and musical storytelling, the show highlights migrant selectors based in Germany, exploring memory, identity, and belonging.
Hosted by azulado, co-founder of Gatxs and organizer based in Leipzig.
About this Episode
Furia Lavada was born and grew up in Managua, Nicaragua, until the age of 19. Today, she's a Berlin-based DJ who loves mixing funky, high-energy sounds with a distinctly eighties style, but with a modern, electronic twist—disco music above all. When putting together her sets, she aims to take the audience on a journey guided by the story she builds in her mind. She picks music that brings her joy and comfort, driven by a deep instinct to create connection through rhythm.
"This show was born from a desire to reflect the memories of my childhood and adolescence in Nicaragua, along with the new memories I've been treasuring on every visit back home. When I think of my little home, I think of my family: mom, dad (rest in peace), my siblings, my nieces and nephews, my better half. I think of the heat, the sun, the sea, the wind; the torrential rains, the flowers, my mom's plants, the birds, the volcanoes. I think of Ometepe Island, where we spent almost all our family vacations; the lagoons and lakes; the crickets at night and the noise of the streets in a hot, traffic-filled Managua. And the 7th of December in León, my second home.
Our piñatas — birthday celebrations — were an essential part of our childhood. Everything revolved around salsa, merengue, laughter, my happy parents, and their friends. I grew up in a family that loved to party, celebrate, and dance. I remember with great affection my parents dancing in the living room to the rhythm of salsa and disco music, surrounded by towers of CDs. At age 9, I was given my first CDs — Shakira and Fey. In this set, you'll find not only music that makes me feel connected to Nicaragua, but to all of Latin America."
