rice & beans

rice and beans is named after gallopinto, a traditional Central American dish you can have for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Like the dish, this monthly morning radio show is meant to accompany you through the day, offering comfort and connection.

With nostalgic sounds and musical storytelling, the show highlights migrant selectors based in Germany, exploring memory, identity, and belonging.

Hosted by azulado, co-founder of Gatxs and organizer based in Leipzig.

About this Episode

rice & beans: a takeover by índigo.

This year marks 3 years since the last time I visited my family in Nicaragua. It would seem like every April the nostalgia grows fonder as the uncertainty of when we will meet again prevails. This so-called heimweh is accompanied by the memories of the car rides to Tupilapa with my grandparents, while we’d listen to the radio La Romantica 98.7 FM “los domingos son para descansar”.

Inspired by the music played on this well-known Nicaraguan radio station and it being the soundtrack of my abuepapi’s and I’s beach trip – we would listen to it during the entire ride there, every ride; becoming a canon element from my childhood and early teens. They also made sure to have it on the whole weekend trip, so we’d lay on hammocks and watch the sunset listening to baladas from the 80s, 90s and early 2000s – introducing me to José José, Camilo Sesto, Isabel Pantoja, among other icons that have become what ties me to mi gente whenever I’m missing home, al otro lado del charco…April symbolizes the grief and uncertainty for many nicaraguans, either in- or out of the diaspora bubble and since grief shows up in different shades every time, I would also like to share songs by Nicaraguan artists that would too play on our rides, like Perrozompopo, Elsa Basil, Katía Cardenal y los Mejía Godoy – to commemorate mi tierra, to feel and you know to reír para no llorar…

Curated by índigo, born in Jinotepe (NI) la ciudad de las mazorcas tiernas and now living in Leipzig – part of Áspora and focused on bridging nostalgic souls through music, because music tells many stories. En los momentos que las palabras me han faltado, siempre ha habido una canción que ha podido decir lo qué yo no y la música me ha unido a mi gente.
