Storytelling – Sitting by the Fireside

Storytelling is a traditional narrative technique in Ghana that connects all regions and social classes. It is used for passing down knowledge, education, and learning, or simply for entertainment. This transmission occurs not only through verbal stories but also through played rhythms (e.g., the Talking Drum), through colors and patterns on clothing, in written texts, or via radio plays. Storytelling, therefore, forms a fundamental foundation and tradition in the education and shaping of communities.

Highlife — the central popular music genre in Ghana, which emerged at the end of the 19th century and has since continually evolved. To this day, Highlife has lost little of its popularity. It serves not only for entertainment but also as a means to express socio-political issues that are often neglected in public discourse. About this Episode

A collage of field recordings, music pieces and interview pieces taken and composed by Miki Yui and Stefan Schneider during their artistic research in Ghana. "During our six-week stay in Ghana, we had many encounters and conversations about issues familiar to us in the West. Through our artistic research on “sound and community” on site, we gained diverse insights into how sound—in the form of music, noise and speech—plays a key role in shaping and organizing communities."
