About this Episode
During the first half of last year, amidst the intense pressure of writing my Bachelor thesis, I lost my grandparents. In a time when my family should have grieved together, discord took root instead. Forced to suppress my sorrow and anger, I retreated into isolation. I fell into a cycle of strong mood swings, carrying heavy regrets for how my pain affected those around me.
While sorting through their belongings a while ago, I discovered a forgotten piece of the past:an old hair clipper. Bought in the 1960s when my grandparents first arrived in Germany as Gastarbeiter, it was the very clipper my mother used to cut their hair throughout mychildhood and one they used until the very end. This simple, everyday object sparked a deep, grounding connection.
For me, the hair clipper essentially represents this process to understand my emotions during my mourning. In a way, I want to use it to cut off my own old hair, drenched in resentment, regret, and sorrow. It is about coming to terms with the situation, forgiving, and letting go. This mix is a reflection of that journey, embodying the conflicting emotions of the past year and exploring the way I navigate my grief today.
