The Kunstpalast in Düsseldorf looks back on a history spanning more than 300 years and sees itself as a civic museum that welcomes all citizens of Düsseldorf and visitors alike. Its origins date back to the 18th century, when Elector Jan Wellem founded a painting gallery in 1709. The museum officially opened in 1913, with its first director, Karl Koetschau, aiming to make art accessible to a broad public. The current building complex in the Ehrenhof, designed by Wilhelm Kreis, was newly conceived in 1926 for the GeSoLei exhibition and has housed the museum since 1928. After extensive renovations by Oswald Mathias Ungers, the museum reopened in 2001. Since November 2023, the Kunstpalast has been presenting a comprehensive new display of its collection across 5,000 m².
The Kunstpalast's collection includes more than 130,000 objects from nearly all artistic genres and eras – from paintings and sculptures to graphic works, applied arts, and design. Particular highlights include works by Peter Paul Rubens, modern and contemporary art, and a unique glass collection.
